Devanagri Sorting Conventions

The Newari Lexicon observes the sort order native to Newari. The Lexicon translates each character in each word into a number that represents its position in the sort order. The numbers for each letter, strung together, create a number that determines the word's sort position.

This table shows the sort positions of characters according to the Classical Sanskrit (CS) conventions and according to the earlier Newari Lexicon / Krodha conventions.

Note: This document uses the Sanskrit Times New Roman font to display the transliterated Roman character representations. If you don't have this font, the characters in the first column (character) will display unpredictable symbols (that depend on the default font you have installed).
